The Winch is a vehicle tool featured in every Spintires game.
Description[]
A Winch is a mechanical device which is essentially a powered crank attached to a wire and hook. The pully is able to pull the rope by using an electric motor or power take-off unit supplied by the vehicles transmission via PTO shaft. With its ability to greatly ease travelling and other miscallaneous tasks, the winch is invaluable in every Spintires game. Though the basic concept has remained relatively unchanged, some mechanics of it have changed throughout the series.
Each vehicle and trailer have a certain number of winch points where the winch can be attached to on a vehicle. The winch can then be attached to other vehicles, poles, trees, and more. It's worth noting while the wire itself is not destructible, some targets can break when subjected to excessive tension, and likewise the vehicle's engine needs to be running for it to use the winch.
Spintires and MudRunner features 2 types of winching. The first option is a pull function which simply allows the vehicle to winch to a suitable spot and pull the truck towards it providing an escape from situations where it is unable to get traction. It can also be used to winch on to another vehicle and use the donor vehicles winch to use pure force to pull the stuck vehicle. The second type of winch option is the drive function, which is only able to used when winched on to another vehicle. With the drive option the vehicle being winched will function as if another person were driving it. It will match the acceleration, braking, reverse, and even steering of the player allowing them to create road trains and move multiple vehicles at once. The 2nd vehicle however will not engage AWD, differential locks, or low gear and often require player intervention.
SnowRunner's winching system is more or less identical. They also expand the variety of options for the winch with numerous variations to greatly improve adaptability. Winches are divided into three classes, namely heavy, medium and scout, and therefore can only be shared between vehicles compatible with their types.
