Black River is the very first map located in Michigan region included in SnowRunner. The map is directly connected to the Smithville Dam map.
Overview[]
Black River is the first map introduced in SnowRunner and serves the purpose as a tutorial level to introduce players to Tasks and Contracts along with vehicle functions.
The player will first begin in the southwestern portion of the map with the only available vehicle being a Chevrolet CK1500. The player will be tasked with reaching a Watchtower and a GMC MH9500. The player must then repair the southern bridge to reach the garage. Once reaching the Garage the player will be rewarded with a Fleetstar F2070A and its AWD upgrade. From here on the road block on the northern exit to the town will be removed giving the player free reign to do jobs or collect vehicles as they see fit.
Black River is a fairly simple map. Its terrain is mostly composed of dirt and asphalt for the main roads with some segments with deep mud. Many of the main roads are blocked off and require tasks to be cleared but the garage and other locations provide trailers with suitable materials that can be used before a trip to the warehouse is required.
The primary focus for contracts on this map is the construction of an oil rig on the island in the river. Completing the road block tasks is a must for this map as this will save time and limit time in mud.
There are 2 main ways to cross the river on this map. The first and easiest way is simply by using the bridge constructed during the tutorial. If the player wants to save time and face a challenge the river can also be crossed from the north. This is extremely difficult without proper vehicle upgrades such as mud tires and differential locks due to the northern crossing being composed entirely of deep mud and water. The river can also be crossed by reaching the island by using a path directly north of the lumber mill and then using the bridge connecting the island to the eastern side of the map.
Overall Black River is a relatively simple and straight forward map that can provide new players a challenge that they can easily complete with limited upgrades available.

Two fuel stations, one on either side of the river. Unfortunately these are the only fuel refilling points, which can lead to dangerously low tanks near the end of missions.

Once the bridge and the landslide on the primary path to the factory are repaired, the route to the factory is easy, with mostly paved roads and very basic dirt sections.

Access to the Warehouse is extremely difficult without a proper off-road vehicle; approaching from the garage side involves plenty of mud and a gigantic water crossing if you don't take the diversion. Be very careful. The warehouse actually provides a sideboard trailer, which enables you to make at least one easy no attachment trip. Unfortunately the warehouse is vital for service spare parts, which make up a large proportion of materials required for clearing roadblocks or landslides.

- Raised suspension - available for Chevrolet CK1500. Once again easily accessible but up a steep hill and requiring a decent but small off-road vehicle
- AAT-8V 5.2 Custom - available for Chevrolet scouts. Easily accessible through a simple track. However, it is best to use a scout or small off-road vehicle for the tight curves.
